Liverpool Sign Florian Wirtz

Liverpool have signed midfielder Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen. The 22-year-old German midfielder signed a £116 million contract with the Reds to become the highest-paid player in British football. 

“I'm really excited to have a new adventure in front of me,” Wirtz said. “This was also a big point of my thoughts: that I want to have something completely new, to go out of the Bundesliga and to join the Premier League. I will see how I can perform there. I hope I can do my best. I spoke also with some players who played there and they told me that it’s perfect for me and every pitch is perfect, you can enjoy every game. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

Wirtz has spent the last 5 and a half seasons in the Bundesliga and became the league’s youngest-ever goal scorer with a strike in 2020. In the 2023-24 season, he led Bayer to the German Cup, scoring 18 goals in 49 appearances across all competitions. In total, Wirtz has 57 career goals, not including the 7 he has scored for the German National Team. Reds supporters can expect Arne Slot to comment on the signing in the coming days.
