Liverpool's clash against Man City given green light to go ahead at the Etihad

Liverpool's clash against Manchester City on 2 July will take place at the Etihad Stadium, despite initial safety fears surrounding the game.

Following Liverpool's 4-0 win over Crystal Palace, the Reds are on the verge of winning the Premier League title for the first time since its inception in 1992.

The Reds could clinch the title on Thursday night, should Man City lose or draw against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

But, should City win, all attention will be on Liverpool's clash against Pep Guardiola's side next week. Liverpool would have the possibility of winning the title at the ground of the reigning champions; a fitting climax to a remarkable season.

The fixture was one of six that could have moved to a neutral venue, after concerns that supporters would congregate outside the stadium to cheer the Reds on to a title victory.

But following exemplary adherence from football supporters around the country, the game has now been given the go-ahead for the Etihad.

Manchester City Council's safety advisory group released the following statement on Thursday:

"The Council's Safety Advisory Group (SAG) for the Etihad Stadium met this morning (Thursday June 25) to review the upcoming fixture between Manchester City FC and Liverpool FC," Manchester City Council confirmed in a statement.

"Following the most recent round of Premier League fixtures which have all taken place behind closed doors the SAG has signalled it has no objections to the above fixture taking place at the Etihad Stadium as planned at 8.15pm, Thursday July 2.

"As with all other Premier League matches this fixture will take place behind closed doors, with no fans present."

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp said earlier this week that his side would play wherever they are told, but would prefer for the game to take place at the Etihad.

"I would prefer [that] it is in Manchester," Klopp said. "Otherwise it would be really difficult to organise. I don't exactly know how that would be but, [because] it will not be in Liverpool, it means we have to go somewhere where we [both clubs] need a hotel probably.

"We don't know how it would be organised. That is an issue, but apart from that, we play where people send us to."

It could be a massive night for the Reds, who could either clinch the title or be given a guard of honour by the current champions, depending on tonight's result.
