Liverpool fell to their first defeat against Arsenal in five years as Mikel Arteta's side beat the champions 2-1 on Wednesday night.

The Reds were hoping for a response after a rare home defeat against Burnley in their last outing.

They made an excellent start to the game as they dominated possession and controlled the game from the off.

They got their reward midway through the first half as Sadio Mane finished from close-range following good work between Andy Robertson and Roberto Firmino.

Liverpool were all over Mikel Arteta's side, but a rare mistake by Virgil van Dijk gifted the ball to Alexandre Lacazette, who rounded Alisson and tucked the ball home.

Arsenal took the lead just before the break - via only their second shot on target - as another costly error, this time by Alisson, saw Reiss Nelson make it 2-1.

Despite Liverpool's best efforts in the second half, it wasn't to be as they suffered defeat in the Premier League for the third time this season.

The result put an end to the Reds' hopes of beating Manchester City's record of most Premier League points in a season, with a maximum of 99 now attainable.
