Liverpool lost a heartbreaking game against Leeds United, 2-1 on Saturday night. Leeds United's Crysencio Summerville scored in the 89th minute to poach all 3 points at Anfield. Jürgen Klopp's men better be devastated having now lost 2 weeks in a row to teams in the relegation zone.
This is Liverpool's 4th loss in the league this season, it is also Liverpool's first loss at Anfield since March of 2021. The result ends a 29-game home unbeaten streak for the Reds.
While it is Leeds' first win on the road all season, and their first win at Liverpool in over 21 years. Liverpool failed once again to carry the momentum gained from midweek Champions League success to the Premier League weekend.
Both teams are known for playing a wide open style of football and it felt that way for most of the match. That makes it a bit surprising that there were just 3 goals in this match. Mohamed Salah scored for Liverpool in the 14th minute. His goal got them even after Leeds' goal through Rodrigo in the 4th minute.
For a long while it seemed like a draw was inevitable. Until Summerville snuck passed Joe Gomez into the box and put the ball just out of reach past Alisson. The strike in the 89th minute absolutely stunned the Reds fans and sent the Whites supporters into a frenzy.
First Half
Liverpool started yet another game in a terrible fashion. In the 4th minute, Joe Gomez tried to play it back to Alisson off the outside of his boot but completely missed the Liverpool keeper. Leeds' striker Rodrigo pounced on the mistake and slotted the ball home to give the Lilywhites the early lead.
It wouldn't take long for Liverpool to tie the game up. Mohamed Salah would get the Reds even in the 14th by getting a foot on to an Andy Robertson cross and directing it into the Leeds United net. Liverpool's response to the early mistake was commendable.
The first half was played at a break-neck pace by both teams. As the half went on, the Reds' possession of the ball became more and more dominant. By the end of the half they would have 68 percent possession and 7 corners. Leeds United would look dangerous on the counter but could not really keep possession of the ball enough to shift momentum.
Second Half
Leeds United came out to start the second half trying to play more on the front foot. Liverpool's defence was solid for the first 20 minutes of the half to keep Leeds at bay. As the half wore on, and Liverpool after the Reds made some substitutes, Liverpool started getting up the pitch once more.
Liverpool's best chances in the second half came through Darwin Núñez. First in the 67th minute from a Mohamed Salah forced turnover. Then in the 79th minute with a curling strike that the Leeds goalkeeper Illan Meslier made a fantastic flying save on.
Meslier made save after save against the Reds throughout the second half. He made big stops against Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino in the half as well. had 9 saves in the game and did everything he could to keep Leeds in the match until they had their opportunity.
That opportunity came in the 89th minute. Summerville's 2nd Premier League goal cost Liverpool dearly. This is one of the most devastating home losses for Liverpool in a long time.
LFC Globe Verdict
Absolute failure. How can a team like Liverpool lose two EPL matches in two weeks against two teams who are fighting against relegation? The inconsistency continues for the Reds, going from looking like European champions on Wednesday to a very average football team on Saturday.
It's hard to blame just one person but there were plenty of opportunities to win this match. Núñez needs to work on his finishing as most of his chances on goal were right at the Leeds goalkeeper. Something needs to be done about the backline as well. The Reds should definitely consider help in the January transfer window.
Man of the Match and What's Next
With a poor result, it's hard to pick a Man of the Match for Liverpool. The MOTM overall was clearly Leeds' goalkeeper Illan Meslier. I'll give the Liverpool MOTM once again to Mohamed Salah. He scored their goal and very nearly set up another that Núñez couldn't finish.
Next up for the Reds is the final Champions League group stage match against Napoli. Kick-off for that one is Tuesday night at 20:00 BST from Anfield. Liverpool will try to pick up the pieces of their Premier League season against Tottenham Hotspur next weekend. That game is in London and will kick-off at 16:30 BST on Sunday, 6th of November.
